THIS ONE IS FTP!!

This is one for the people… undeniably one for the impoverished populations of the world…seldom do world organizations come together and the result is something charitable…something feasible…something that does not appear have any cryptic motives…something that does not have a hefty price tag. The OLPC’s XO-1 is a cheap laptop computer that is intended to be distributed amongst participating Third World nations; so that their children can have access to information that me, you, you and most definitely you find readily available. The laptop was developed by a socially cognizant organization, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), which is comprised of researchers at MIT. Pricing is currently set at $188, but the organization aims to lower the price to $100 by 2008; the going rate for two pairs of Blazers at your local sneak boutique.
Mind you, several devices and or features have being purposely omitted from the computer’s design so as to minimize production costs and power consumption. But never fret, the laptop contains 3 USB ports that will allow peripherals to be connected. Oh yeah it also has a built in video camera and microphone…I wish my computer had a mic… “All I need is one mic… that’s all I need”…Yes, yes I am sure several of you probably think this computer is second-rate by today’s embryonic standards and figure that by the time you buy the external components, you would have in all probability spent the same amount as you would if you had bought a Compaq Notebook. Granted there might be better suited initiatives and or programs that might be more applicable to the needs of Third World nations; still it’s idea that is being implemented that is of significance, the notion that the powers that be can band together in an effort to make poverty-stricken children more in tune with technological advancements of today’s information driven society. Maybe the heads that control bona fide AIDS or HIV medications…u know the ones that actually work…don’t believe me run ask Magic…can take cues from OLPC and make this medicine that we know exists inexpensively available to the Third World.
