Do you remeber? pt. I
It’s crazy how this whole 80s + 90s epidemic gotten so big. I love the old school era not because I think it’s fashionably cool. I love it because it takes me back to when I was growing up as a kid and admiring everything that was cool then. Every now and then I sit back and relax to my old school jams. When I drive my car, I usually tune to 98.7 where they play that “grown folks” music. The type of music your parents used to listen to but you can’t front, you caught yourself dancing to it plenty of times at the family BBQ. Now a days I see 15, 16, 17 and 18 year olds talking about they are an 80’s babies. Come on now, were you even born in the 80’s? I myself don’t even claim to be an “80’s baby”. Yes I was born in the 80’s but I grew up in the 90’s. This post is for all my people who were raised in the 90’s and loved every bit of it. I’m talking about my 20 something year olds. I’d like to call this segment, do you remember?
Now, the majority of my wardrobe consists of vintage clothing. Some days I do throw on bright colors that were inspired by the old school but people, I don’t dress like this on an everyday basis. My style is constantly changing depending on how I feel. But anyways let’s take it back. I want to know how many people can reminisce to the good old days.
Fashion in the 90’s was very bright and very pro-Africa. Everyone wanted to represent the mother land even though they weren’t from “the mother land”. But do you remember those leather African medallions that the hip hop artist used to wear? And you wanted them sooo bad?
Do you remember street wear was the hip hop version of the Looney Toons on t-shirts and the black Bart Simpson? Do you remember when A tribe called quest? Bush babies? Shabba Ranks? Arrested development? When Michael Jackson was black?? Do you remember your first flat top fade with the part on the side? You thought you were the flyest guy in elementary school until you saw the other kid with a higher flat top, part on the side PLUS the braided pony tail on the back of his head.
Do you remember running home on Fridays to watch TGIF? Family matters was the shit and you knew the theme song to Step by step even though you didn’t watch it all the time. Full House and the Olsen tiwns, DWAYNE WAYNE! Everyone was trying to find out where he bought those flip up glasses and you really thought the college In “A different world” was real. (I honestly told my mother I was applying Hillman college when I get to high school) The Cosby show, Saved by the bell, In living Color, those were some of your favorite shows. Do you remember that? Darkwing duck, Tales spin, Duck tales, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ring a bell?
In school you HAD to have a Jansport book bag. You even got in trouble for stealing the strings off other peoples book bags. If you didn’t have a starter jacket or hat, you weren’t cool. Bootlegs ran the streets, not today’s bootlegs, I’m talking about the Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, and Polo knock offs. Unfortunately, my loving mother had to sew a polo man on my polo shirt. But yo, you couldn’t wait for summer time. It was all about family BBQ’s, Super soakers and Nerf! You had a crush on that cute little girl at the family BBQ but your mom told you that’s your distant cousin so from that day on you became mean to her till you guys were teens. There was no such thing as beef or hate back then. It was all about hanging outside late at your friends house playing Sega genesis and Street Fighter II on Super NES. Man those were the good old days.
I can go on and on about the old school days but it’s just all just memories. But I’m so stuck on these memories man. I try to live them and escape the current time sometimes. It was a time where everyone was just in a good mood. Positive you know? That’s why I try to stay positive through out all the negativity that goes on today. But I want to hear from you guys, I know I haven’t covered many and that some of you can’t relate to the same things I grew up on but let me know about your old school memories and ask me… “Do YOU remember?”
